Description Lubricating oils are lubricants that are applied to the surface of machine elements and bearing surfaces to maintain them in a lubricated condition and to reduce wear. Lubricant additives enhance the properties of lubricant oils by improving the lubricity of the oil on the metal surfaces, increasing the viscosity index of the oil or the film strength of the oil, and improving the oxidation stability of the oil or resistance to rust and corrosion. Lubricant additives include rust inhibitors, antioxidants, detergents, demulsifiers, and anti-wear agents.
