Economic Complexity Index

Long Time Series (1964-2017)

This page contains a long-time series dataset for the Economic Complexity Index (ECI) and the Product Complexity Index (PCI) constructed using a combination of the data generated by Robert Feenstra et al. (2005) expanded after the year 2000 using SITC-4 rev. 2 data downloaded from the UN’s Comtrade. This is the series data used in the original 2009 Economic Complexity paper (Hidalgo and Hausmann 2009) and the 2011/2014 book (The Atlas of Economic Complexity).
This time series has been discontinued, since the SITC-4 rev 2 product categorization has become outdated in comparison to modern revisions of the Harmonized system. For the latest ECI and PCI data click respectively here (ECI) and here (PCI).
A summary of the methods can be found in the methods section and in this review paper.
