Description Primary cells and batteries use the chemical energy from the reactants to generate electrical energy. In a typical lead acid battery, the reactants are lead dioxide and sulfuric acid. When the battery is being charged, the sulfuric acid is converted to lead sulfate, and the lead dioxide is converted to lead peroxide. When the battery is in use, the lead peroxide is converted to lead sulfate, and the lead sulfate is converted to lead dioxide. This creates a charge-discharge cycle.
